Statement from the NMC regarding changes to English Language requirements.
As of February 8th, 2023, the NMC has extended the duration for combining test scores from six months to twelve months and revised their minimum scores for combined tests. However, it’s important to note that the required scores for both the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Occupational English Test (OET) have not been altered, and they still stand at 7.0 for IELTS (with 6.5 in writing) and B for OET (with a C+ in writing).
Supporting information
In addition, they have initiated the acceptance of supporting information from employers as an additional proof of English language proficiency. This policy, for now, is only applicable to individuals who were trained in a country where English is not the primary language and who have been employed for at least one year in an unregulated position in a UK-based health and social care environment. We will also require confirmation that their training and evaluation were con-ducted in English.
The NMC is reaching out to individuals who have already commenced their applications and might qualify to utilize supporting information from their employers. If you’re an applicant and believe that you meet the requirements to use employer-provided supporting information, please proceed with your application as usual, and the NMC will contact you to ask for additional de-tails.
Changes still to come
Starting later this year, they will start acknowledging employer-provided supporting information for individuals who failed to achieve the required score by 0.5 in IELTS or half a grade in OET in any one of the four language domains, given that they have utilized all available test combining alternatives.
In the coming months, the NMC will be implementing modifications to their systems to automate this aspect of the application process. Applicants will be able to indicate their intention to utilize this supplementary information as a part of their online application process, while line managers and counter-signatories will also be able to furnish their supporting information through NMC Online.
Please have a look at the NMC website for more information.
